The following black and white photos were taken during the early 1990’s using a manual Olympus camera – which today in our era of modern digital cameras and smart phones is like ancient history. The film I used was generally 400 ASA. I developed the film myself and printed them on quality paper. These images in other words are photos taken with my Panasonic Lumix of the paper images originally taken with my Olympus.

If taking photos has undergone a revolution, then so has India – these street scenes belong to a distant past. Today Indian cities are a maelstrom of traffic – cars and trucks – and the pollution is so heavy that it is doubtful what a lens can record besides mist and moving metal. 

Our ever changing world brings with it changes for the good – rising living standards e.g. – and and their grim antithesis. In India today, there is a large middle class – along with a far larger impoverished underclass, whose living standards have not changed over the course of the last decades.
