My partner and I have just returned to our aparment in Rotterdam after two and half weeks walking in the south west of Serbia. The places and the accomodation varied greatly but one thing was consistent: how helpful and friendly the locals were. Up until now, not many Western Europeans have shown any interest in Serbia and the few tourists who do appear are overwhelmingly from Eastern Europe. At the moment, there is not a lot of accomodation available and the diversity of places we ended up varied from ‘different’, to good and sometimes, exellent.

In some of the villages/small towns we stayed in, the way of life was certainly far behind Western Europe – which was precisely its charm and not to forget, Serbia has a low population density; the country is twice as big as The Netherlands (population 17 million) with a population of five and half million.
