A recent stay in inner city Melbourne led to me doing long walks through the areas of Carlton and Fitzroy. I’m not a great admirer of big cities (although I have been based for many years in Rotterdam), but I was surprised by what I found in these two areas, which are so close to the city centre: well preserved old English houses, pubs and buildings hailing from the 19th century, combined with a cosmopolitan/multicultural urban scene.
